Empty State (UX)

An empty state is the screen or component shown when an interface has no items or results to display.

An empty state is the screen or component shown when an interface has no items or results to display. A project gallery with no photographs yet, a search with no matches, or an empty appointment list may each need different guidance. Rather than showing a blank area, an empty state can explain why nothing appears and offer an appropriate next step. It is not a 404 error page: the interface may be functioning normally even though its collection is empty. For a small business, useful wording can prevent visitors from mistaking an absence of results for a broken website. Avoid offering actions that are not actually available.
