YouTube Shorts
YouTube Shorts are short-form videos classified and distributed through YouTube’s Shorts experience, subject to current format and duration rules.
YouTube Shorts is YouTube’s short-form video format, with its own viewing and discovery experience. For standard channels, YouTube says square or vertical videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 and lasting up to three minutes can be categorized as Shorts. Older uploads and certain channel types have different historical rules. Classification, music rights, and monetization eligibility should not be inferred from duration alone.
A home-services business could use a Short to explain a single homeowner question, show a safe before-and-after job sequence, or demonstrate how to prepare for an estimate. The first seconds should communicate the topic, while captions and framing help viewers follow on a mobile screen. A Shorts view is not automatically a website visit, lead, or appointment, so reporting should separate audience behavior from business outcomes.
Shorts differ from a generic short-form video strategy, which may cover Instagram, TikTok, and other channels. YouTube-specific issues include music licensing, Content ID, channel policies, and platform analytics. Creators should verify the current YouTube Help documentation before relying on an older one-minute maximum or assuming any copyrighted track can be used in a commercial video.
