WP-CLI

WP-CLI is a command-line interface for administering WordPress installations, including plugins, core, users, database operations, and scripted maintenance.

WP-CLI lets an authorized administrator operate many WordPress functions through a terminal rather than clicking through the dashboard. Commands can inspect plugin status, manage updates, create users, or run maintenance tasks. Its suitability depends on hosting access, user permissions, command availability, and the risks of the intended operation.

A small agency managing several WordPress sites might use an approved script to list pending plugin updates and produce a change report. Before applying changes, the operator should confirm the target environment, record backups, inspect compatibility, and test high-risk modifications on staging. A terminal command can affect an entire site rapidly; automation increases the importance of credentials, audit trails, and a tested recovery plan. WP-CLI documentation includes commands to update plugins and the CLI itself, which are different operations.

WP-CLI is not a front-end performance plugin and does not make WordPress secure automatically. It is a management tool with privileges supplied by its execution context. Organizations should restrict shell access and avoid storing secrets in shared command histories. For a business owner, it is useful to understand the maintenance process even when a developer runs the commands. This term is about the WordPress command-line workflow, not generic server SSH administration or cost-per-click advertising.
