WordPress Database Optimization

WordPress database optimization is the careful maintenance of stored site data and database tables to reduce unnecessary overhead and protect reliability.

WordPress stores posts, settings, comments, and much plugin data in a database. Database optimization may involve reviewing excessive revisions, expired temporary records, orphaned plugin data, table health, and the size of stored options. The right action depends on the site’s configuration and actual performance problem. Removing records without understanding their purpose can destroy content or break a plugin.

WordPress documentation explains that revisions are saved in the database and can be limited. The official WP-CLI command `wp db optimize` exists, but a table optimization command is not the same as safely identifying obsolete content. A production maintenance plan should start with a tested database backup, inventory large tables, and evaluate changes on staging when possible. Keep rollback procedures for any cleanup that deletes data.

For a busy service company’s booking website, slow pages may arise from plugins, network conditions, uncached requests, or heavy queries rather than a large database alone. Measure query and page performance before attributing improvements to cleanup. This term is narrower than the general Website Database entry: it concerns operational diagnosis and maintenance of a WordPress installation, not database concepts in the abstract.
