WordPress Custom Taxonomy
A WordPress custom taxonomy is a developer-defined classification system for organizing posts or other content types into reusable terms.
WordPress comes with familiar classification systems such as categories and tags. Developers can also register custom taxonomies for a site-specific purpose, such as product material, project location or service specialization. Each taxonomy contains terms; depending on the configuration, those terms may be hierarchical or nonhierarchical.
WordPress provides register_taxonomy() to define or modify a taxonomy and connect it to supported object types. Implementation decisions include labels, visibility, REST API support, permissions, rewrite rules and how archive pages are handled. Creating a taxonomy in code is different from assigning a tag to a single post.
A custom taxonomy is useful only when the classification helps both editors and users. Avoid producing thousands of empty or repetitive term archives; plan templates, indexing behavior and navigation before exposing archives to search engines. Test taxonomy registration and content editing in a staging environment.
