WordPress Custom Post Type
A WordPress custom post type is a registered content type for managing records that do not fit ordinary posts or pages, such as projects or staff profiles.
A WordPress custom post type (CPT) lets a site store and manage a distinct class of content, such as completed projects, service locations, team profiles, or equipment listings. WordPress already provides built-in post types including posts and pages. Developers and plugins can register additional types with the register_post_type() function, defining labels and behavior for each type.
For a service-business website, a 'Projects' type might make it easier for an editor to add completed jobs using a consistent workflow instead of constructing every portfolio page from scratch. Registration can expose its own admin menu when configured to do so, but it does not automatically provide every custom field, public design, archive page, or SEO treatment. Those depend on registration arguments, field definitions, templates, routing, and the site's actual theme or application.
WordPress recommends registering custom post types through a plugin rather than tying the definition to a theme, helping preserve content management when the site's appearance changes. A CPT also differs from a taxonomy: a post type describes what kind of record exists, while a taxonomy groups or classifies records. Teams should confirm who controls registration, what happens after plugin deactivation, and whether public visibility and canonical URLs meet the site's needs. Not every site needs a custom type; sometimes pages, posts, or a taxonomy are simpler and easier to maintain.
