Website Total Cost of Ownership

Website total cost of ownership is the combined cost of building, operating, maintaining and eventually replacing a website over time.

The upfront development quote is only one part of a website's lifetime cost. Total cost of ownership also includes recurring hosting and domain fees, security updates, software licenses, design changes, accessibility and content work, backups, technical support, and any later migration or rebuild. Some costs are contractual, while others depend on how often the business changes services or requires new features.

A fair comparison uses the same time horizon for competing options and separates one-time from recurring expenses. Owners should also ask what happens when an agency relationship ends: who can access the hosting, source code, domain account and analytics, and what export or termination charges apply? A low initial offer can be economical, but it is not necessarily cheaper over several years.

This is a budgeting framework rather than a universal dollar benchmark. The final amount depends on project complexity, vendor agreements, required reliability and the in-house work a business can perform. A documented ownership inventory prevents transfer costs from being overlooked.
