WebP Image Format

WebP is a web image format that supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation.

WebP is an image file format designed to provide useful visual quality while reducing transfer size in many web scenarios. It supports photographic compression, lossless images, transparent areas and animation. For a service business, it is one option for compressing project galleries, staff photos and page graphics.

A WebP file is not automatically small: pixel dimensions, export quality, metadata and the image's visual complexity still affect the amount of data downloaded. The right format also depends on what the image contains. PNG or SVG may be better for particular diagrams and icons, and AVIF can offer competitive compression for photographs.

Modern browsers broadly support WebP, although some older versions may need a fallback image. Responsive images and sensible display dimensions can matter more than changing the extension alone. Test both file size and visual appearance rather than assuming a conversion always improves the page.
