Web Font Fallback

A web font fallback is an alternative typeface a browser can display when the website's preferred font is unavailable or has not loaded yet. A landscaping website might request a custom typeface but specify a familiar system font as the backup. The fallback should remain legible and reasonably similar in size and spacing so headings, buttons, and forms do not shift dramatically. Different devices may use different available system fonts. A fallback does not solve every slow-loading font problem; it is one part of a wider font-loading strategy. Designers should check real pages with the custom font disabled, including narrow mobile layouts.
