Value Proposition Canvas
The Value Proposition Canvas is a framework for comparing a specific customer segment’s jobs, pains and gains with the value offered by a product or service.
The Value Proposition Canvas makes a marketing promise testable by separating two views. Its customer profile records the tasks customers are trying to accomplish, frustrations that get in the way and outcomes they want. Its value map describes the services or products offered, how they relieve pains and how they create gains. The purpose is to find evidence-backed fit between the two sides.
For a small HVAC company, a customer job might be restoring reliable cooling before a family gathering. Waiting for an uncertain technician window is a pain; a realistic scheduling promise is a potential pain reliever. The worksheet should not be filled with assumptions about what every homeowner values. Interviews, service records and observed purchasing behavior help test the proposed matches.
This is not the value proposition itself. A value proposition is the concise promise communicated to a customer; the canvas is a working framework that helps develop and refine that promise. It also does not replace pricing, demand research or actual delivery capabilities. The result should influence site copy and offer design only after the claims can be supported.
