Unwanted Referrals (GA4)

GA4 unwanted referrals are domains configured to be ignored as referral sources on matching events so external workflows do not wrongly claim traffic attribution.

Unwanted referrals in GA4 are domains an administrator identifies so visits returning from those domains do not incorrectly receive new referral-source credit. For example, a customer might leave a service site to complete a third-party appointment or payment step, then return to the original site. GA4 can be configured to ignore the specified referrer on matching events, helping preserve a more meaningful attribution trail. GA4 already handles many self-referrals from the same domain or its subdomains automatically, and properly configured cross-domain measurement can also prevent some unwanted referral attribution; extra exclusions are not always necessary. The setting adds an ignore-referrer instruction to matching events; it is not a historical data deletion tool, a complete cross-domain tracking solution, or a way to eliminate genuine third-party referrals. Confirm the actual user journey before adding payment or booking domains, since ignoring legitimate referrers can hide valuable acquisition information.
