Trigger-Based Email

Trigger-based email is a message or sequence sent automatically when a specified user action, status change or event occurs.

A trigger might be an account signup, an abandoned checkout, a completed appointment or a customer moving to a new lifecycle stage. The email platform listens for the event and applies rules to select recipients, timing and content. Unlike a scheduled newsletter sent to a list at a chosen time, each send can depend on a person’s interaction or a connected system’s update.

Well-designed flows need reliable event data, suppression rules, frequency limits and clear ownership between marketing and transactional systems. A reminder email may be useful after an appointment is booked, but duplicate integrations can send several copies. Tracking should distinguish deliveries from clicks and later business outcomes; an automated send is not proof the message was read or influenced a sale.

Legal requirements vary with message type, location and recipient consent. An order receipt may be treated differently from an upsell series, and the presence of a trigger does not exempt promotional messages from applicable marketing rules. This term describes the event logic in one email flow rather than the full strategy of Email Automation.
