Text Message Marketing
Text message marketing uses permission-based SMS or similar mobile messaging to send promotional communications to customers.
Text message marketing sends promotional offers, reminders or updates to mobile numbers. It can be useful when a customer has expressly asked for relevant communication, but a phone number collected for an appointment or a missed call does not automatically authorize marketing campaigns. Businesses should distinguish transactional messages from promotions and maintain evidence of consent suitable for the message type and technology.
A responsible program explains who will send the messages, what recipients can expect and how they can opt out. Message volume should be proportionate to the customer's expectations, and the system must respect suppression requests. In the United States, requirements may arise from federal telecommunications law, state law and carrier rules; the specific rules depend on the setup and should be checked before launch.
Success should be measured against a defined goal, such as bookings attributable to a campaign, not merely delivered message count. A business should also avoid placing sensitive customer details in ordinary marketing SMS.
