STAR Method for Case Studies

The STAR method is a Situation–Task–Action–Result storytelling framework that can help structure a concise, evidence-based customer case study.

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. It is widely known as a framework for describing experiences and can also be adapted to customer case studies. Start with the client's situation, explain the specific challenge or objective, describe the work performed, and close with the outcome. The sequence makes it easier to show how a service was connected to an observable result instead of relying on generic praise.

A credible business case study requires more than four headings. Confirm that the customer approves the facts and quotations, explain the measurement period, and avoid implying that one action caused an improvement when other factors may have contributed. If exact results cannot be published, provide a concrete qualitative change and describe the limitation. Protect confidential information and do not invent customer names, timelines, or performance numbers.

STAR is a reusable narrative structure, not a proprietary case-study standard or a substitute for evidence. It differs from the broader concept of a customer case study, which may use other formats and include photographs, interviews, or detailed methodology.
