Share of Wallet

Share of wallet is the proportion of a customer’s total spending in a product or service category captured by one provider.

Share of wallet answers a customer-level question: of everything a particular buyer spends in a category, how much goes to this business? A common calculation is the amount spent with the company divided by the customer’s total category spending, multiplied by 100. Unlike market share, it focuses on an individual buyer or defined customer segment rather than overall market sales.

The main difficulty is knowing total spending across competitors. A business may observe its own transactions but often has only survey estimates or incomplete third-party information about the customer’s wider purchases. Teams should label estimates, define the category clearly and avoid turning partial records into a falsely precise percentage.

Improving share of wallet may involve earning repeat business, serving adjacent needs or reducing friction for existing customers. It does not prove loyalty by itself: a customer might have a high share simply because few competing services are available. Always interpret the metric alongside retention, profitability and customer experience.
