Service Dispatching

Service dispatching is the assignment and coordination of field workers, appointments, travel routes, and job updates for service calls.

Service dispatching turns incoming work into an executable field schedule. A dispatcher or field-service system decides which technician, crew, or vehicle should take a job based on skills, location, availability, urgency, equipment, and the time promised to the customer. Dispatching can happen through a shared calendar, a phone-based coordinator, or specialized software.

The work does not stop when a technician receives an assignment. Dispatchers also handle delayed arrivals, new urgent requests, canceled appointments, missing parts, and updates to customers. Good dispatch records connect a service request to the assigned crew, address, job notes, status changes, and completion outcome. Unclear assignments can create missed visits or duplicate travel.

Service dispatching is one operational function within field service management. It is narrower than general customer service, and it is not the same as a website service page. Technology can support decisions, but routing quality also depends on accurate job information and realistic schedules.
