Service Call Fee
A service call fee is a charge a service provider may assess for traveling to, inspecting, or diagnosing a customer's problem.
A service call fee is an initial charge associated with visiting a customer to assess a job. Depending on the provider, it may cover travel, scheduling, a minimum amount of technician time, or preliminary diagnosis. The fee can be separate from any later repair, or credited toward the work if the customer accepts a quote. There is no universal rule that every contractor uses the same arrangement.
Customers should be told what the fee covers, whether it is payable if no repair is approved, and whether after-hours or emergency calls have different terms. Businesses should avoid describing a trip charge as a repair price if the actual work has not been diagnosed. Clear estimates and confirmations reduce misunderstandings.
A service call fee is different from a labor rate, flat-rate repair price, or cancellation fee. Applicable consumer rules vary by jurisdiction and service category, so the final invoice and advertising should match the provider's actual policy.
