Screen Reader

A screen reader is assistive technology that conveys digital content through speech or braille output.

A screen reader is assistive technology that conveys digital content through speech or braille output. People who are blind, have low vision, or benefit from alternative reading methods may use it to navigate headings, links, forms, and other page elements. On a service website, a button labeled only with an unexplained icon can be difficult to understand if its accessible name is missing. Screen readers rely on meaningful structure and labels; they do not simply read every screen pixel from top to bottom. Testing with assistive technology can reveal problems that are invisible in a visual design review. Accessibility is a design and content responsibility, not a separate decorative feature.
