Plain Language

Plain language makes information easier for the intended reader to find, understand, and use.

Plain language makes information easier for the intended reader to find, understand, and use. On a home repair website, that might mean replacing a vague statement about 'comprehensive residential solutions' with a clear description of the repairs offered. Plain writing uses familiar terms, meaningful headings, straightforward sentence structure, and explanations for unavoidable technical language. It does not mean removing important details or talking down to the reader. Clear communication also helps people who are reading quickly or using assistive technology, although plain language alone does not ensure accessibility. Readability scores can offer clues, but actual comprehension and the needs of the audience remain more important than reaching a particular numerical grade.
