PEST Analysis
PEST analysis is a strategic scanning method that examines political, economic, social and technological forces outside an organization.
PEST analysis helps a business see external conditions that could change its customers, costs or operating assumptions. Political factors can include public-policy changes; economic factors can include interest rates or household spending; social factors concern behavior and demographics; and technological factors cover tools and infrastructure that reshape service delivery. These are categories for investigation, not a score generated automatically by software.
A local service company might review municipal restrictions affecting work schedules, rising supplier costs, customer demand for online booking and improvements in route scheduling tools. Each observation should have a date, geographic scope, evidence source and potential business implication. Teams can then distinguish likely near-term decisions from speculative trends.
PEST differs from SWOT analysis, which groups strengths and weaknesses alongside opportunities and threats. PEST focuses on the external environment, not on whether a firm has good technicians or a weak website. PESTLE adds legal and environmental headings; organizations should make their chosen framework explicit rather than count the same issue twice. The exercise is valuable only when its findings inform decisions and are revisited.
