Performance Max

Performance Max is a goal-based Google Ads campaign type that uses automation to run advertisements across multiple Google advertising channels from one campaign.

Performance Max (often called PMax) is a Google Ads campaign type designed around conversion goals rather than a separate keyword list for every placement. It can access Google inventory such as Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. Advertisers provide conversion objectives, budgets, creative assets, and other controls; Google's systems determine combinations and placements intended to meet the campaign goals.

For a local service business, a useful setup begins by defining meaningful conversions. A clicked phone number is not always a qualified lead; an answered call or confirmed booking may be a better target if it can be measured accurately and within applicable privacy rules. Campaign performance should be evaluated alongside lead quality, service area, sales capacity, and the cost of actual jobs. Google provides controls and reporting, but the available options can change, so check the current account interface and official documentation.

Performance Max is not the same as a keyword-targeted Search campaign, and it does not guarantee lower lead costs or better coverage in every location. It can complement other campaigns, but it needs sound conversion tracking, appropriate creative assets, sensible exclusions, and ongoing review. Automation changes where decisions are made; it does not eliminate advertiser responsibility.
