Penetration Testing
Penetration testing is an authorized security assessment in which testers attempt to exploit weaknesses in systems or applications under defined rules.
Penetration testing examines whether an attacker could use vulnerabilities to gain unintended access or disrupt a system. Unlike an automated vulnerability scan that reports possible weaknesses, a carefully scoped test may verify exploitability and show how weaknesses combine. The scope should identify target systems, allowed techniques, timing, communication contacts and stop conditions. A finding is more useful when it explains business impact and a reproducible remediation path.
For a business website, a test might examine authenticated roles, exposed administration functions or application input handling. A competent assessor documents evidence without unnecessary access to sensitive customer data. The team must coordinate with hosting providers and other owners where required; a company’s right to operate a website does not automatically authorize intrusive testing against every connected third-party service.
Results should be prioritized, corrected and retested. A passing test is not permanent proof of security because code, configurations and threats change. Penetration testing differs from general code review, threat modeling and compliance certification, although those activities can complement it. Testing must always be performed with explicit permission and appropriate safeguards.
