PCI-DSS Compliance

PCI DSS compliance means meeting applicable Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard requirements for protecting payment account data.

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) sets baseline technical and operational security requirements for entities that store, process or transmit cardholder data, as well as parties that can affect the security of the cardholder data environment. Its scope can include merchants, payment processors and service providers. PCI DSS is an industry security standard, not a government license or an automatic certification of a website.

The relevant requirements and validation method depend on the organization's payment architecture, role and applicable card-network or acquiring-bank obligations. Using a properly designed hosted payment flow may reduce how much card data a merchant's systems handle, but outsourcing payments does not automatically erase every compliance duty. Teams should document how card data travels, who can access it and which vendors are responsible for controls.

Compliance work is ongoing: access controls, vulnerability management, secure configurations, logging and periodic validation cannot be replaced with a one-time badge. For detailed obligations or assessment eligibility, consult the PCI Security Standards Council documentation and the relevant acquiring institution or qualified assessor.
