Path Length (Analytics)
Path length in analytics is the number of recorded touchpoints in a conversion journey, measured according to a particular platform’s attribution rules.
Path length helps teams understand whether tracked conversions tend to follow one interaction or a longer sequence. In Google Analytics attribution reporting, the path is formed from available channel touchpoints before a key event. A short path does not prove that the buyer made a quick decision; earlier offline or untracked experiences may be invisible.
When analyzing path length, first specify what counts as a touchpoint, the lookback window, the selected key event and whether the report includes only observed interactions. Compare distributions rather than treating an average as the full story. Longer paths may reflect research-intensive purchases, repeat site visits or fragmented tracking rather than higher marketing quality.
Path length is not the same as session duration, page depth or funnel step count. It can inform messaging and measurement priorities, but it does not by itself assign causal credit to each channel. Privacy limits, cross-device activity and consent choices can affect what the report observes.
