Passage Ranking
Passage ranking is a Google Search system that evaluates relevant sections within a page to better understand how the entire page may answer a query.
Passage ranking helps Google Search understand that a section of a longer page may contain a particularly useful answer even when the page covers several other subjects. Google's ranking-systems documentation describes this as identifying individual passages to better assess a web page's relevance. It should not be confused with creating separate indexed URLs for each paragraph; the page remains the unit presented in ordinary search results.
For publishers, the practical implication is editorial clarity. Give important questions direct answers, use descriptive headings where they improve navigation, and keep supporting context close to the explanation. A well-organized comparison or a clearly labeled FAQ section may help people and search systems understand the page. There is no special "passage ranking" tag to install, and splitting every answer into a separate thin page is not an SEO requirement.
Passage ranking differs from a featured snippet: the former concerns relevance assessment, while the latter is a visible search-result presentation that can quote an answer.
