Multi-Touch Attribution

Multi-touch attribution is an approach to assigning marketing credit across more than one interaction that precedes a defined conversion.

Multi-touch attribution examines journeys in which a prospective customer encounters several marketing touchpoints before taking action. A person might first view an educational video, later click a search ad and finally submit a branded website form. Instead of assigning all credit to only the first or last observed step, a multi-touch model distributes credit according to stated rules or a data-driven method.

Different models answer different questions. Linear models split credit evenly; position-based models weight particular steps; data-driven models use statistical approaches whose inputs and behavior vary by platform. The reported result depends on identity resolution, consent, tracking coverage, conversion definitions and the attribution window. Offline recommendations and untracked conversations can remain invisible.

A local service provider should avoid treating modeled credit as causal proof. Incrementality testing can answer a different question: whether marketing activity generated outcomes that otherwise would not have occurred. Multi-touch attribution also differs from self-reported attribution, which records the source a customer says they remember. When presenting results, document the model and compare bookings or revenue quality rather than assuming fractional credit equals profit.
