Lookalike Audience
A lookalike audience is an advertising audience built to resemble a defined source group using patterns a platform can lawfully use for matching.
Lookalike audience tools help advertisers reach people who resemble a seed or source audience, such as eligible customers or previous purchasers. Platforms compare available signals from the seed group and build a larger audience based on similar characteristics. The precise signals, controls and availability vary by platform and can change. A lookalike audience is not a list of the source customers’ identities disclosed to the advertiser.
A well-defined source group matters. A list of qualified customers can be more informative than an indiscriminate set of site visitors, provided use of those records is permitted and respects platform rules and privacy obligations. Advertisers should check audience size requirements, regional restrictions and whether broad or automated targeting has altered the platform’s recommended workflow. Seed quality, creative relevance and tracking integrity all affect outcomes.
Measure campaigns by incremental qualified outcomes where possible, not simply by the platform reporting a high similarity score. Lookalike targeting is not a guarantee that new users have the same purchasing intent or will convert. It differs from retargeting, which aims to reach people who already interacted with the business; lookalikes seek additional people with similar characteristics.
