Licensed and Insured Disclaimer

A licensed and insured disclaimer is a qualification or explanatory statement accompanying a business claim about professional licensing and insurance coverage.

The phrase “licensed and insured” can reassure customers, but its meaning depends on the business, the applicable jurisdiction and the actual policy and credential. Licensing may apply to specific trades, activities or locations, and insurance can differ by type, policy limit, exclusion and effective date. A footer label is not proof of a current license or a promise that every type of loss is covered.

A responsible statement identifies relevant qualifications accurately and avoids implying blanket protection. A contractor might name the jurisdiction and license number when required or appropriate, and make current documentation available for verification. Marketing should not substitute a broad “fully insured” claim for evidence of relevant coverage. The FTC’s general truth-in-advertising principle requires objective claims to be supportable.

A disclaimer does not erase misleading claims elsewhere on a page and does not make an unlicensed activity lawful. Businesses should check local advertising and trade-specific disclosure requirements and have qualified counsel review jurisdiction-dependent language. This term concerns claim qualification, not the website-wide legal disclaimer that defines broader site conditions and limitations.
