Jobs to Be Done (JTBD)

Jobs to Be Done (JTBD) is a customer-research framework that examines the progress people want to make in a particular situation, rather than only product features.

Jobs to Be Done (JTBD) approaches buying decisions by asking what progress a person is trying to make in a specific circumstance. The 'job' is not necessarily the literal task advertised by a company. It can include a functional outcome, emotional concerns, and social considerations that influence which solution feels appropriate. The framework is associated with research and writing by Clayton Christensen and others; different practitioners use somewhat different methods.

Consider someone searching for an emergency tree service. The immediate task may be to remove a fallen limb, but the broader job could involve restoring safe access to a driveway, understanding the next step, and avoiding an uncertain bill. A business that focuses only on equipment and crew size may overlook the urgency, reassurance, and communication the customer is actually seeking. JTBD interviews explore the triggering situation, alternatives considered, constraints, and signs that the problem was resolved.

Teams can use these findings to refine website messaging, service packages, decision guides, and onboarding. However, JTBD is a research lens, not a formula proving that one message will increase conversions. Interview impressions should be tested against observable behavior, service capacity, and actual outcomes. It is also different from demographic personas: two homeowners of different ages may have the same job in one situation, while one homeowner may have different jobs at different times.
