Information Gain
Information gain in digital content is the additional useful knowledge a page provides beyond what readers or competing resources already explain.
A search result that repeats familiar definitions may answer a basic question but add little incremental value. An article with a tested comparison, original measurement, a decision table or a clearly explained edge case can provide more useful information. Information gain is best treated as an editorial evaluation lens rather than a quantity that a site owner can reliably calculate from Google Search Console.
For a service business, useful novelty might mean photographing the steps of a real installation, documenting how a local permitting process works or explaining why an apparently cheap quote omits essential costs. The unique details must be accurate and relevant to the reader’s question; adding unrelated anecdotes or length does not improve usefulness. A concise, firsthand answer can be more valuable than a long generic guide.
Google’s people-first content guidance encourages original information, analysis and direct experience, but does not publish a website-owner information-gain score or a guaranteed ranking formula. The phrase should not be confused with a specific confirmed Google ranking factor. Evaluate whether a visitor learned something actionable without claiming a measurable boost for every original paragraph.
