Image Resolution

Image resolution describes the amount of visual detail an image contains, commonly expressed through its pixel dimensions. A 1,200-by-800-pixel photograph has a different level of pixel detail from a 300-by-200-pixel version, even if both show the same landscaped yard. Resolution affects how sharp an image looks when displayed at different sizes, but a larger image file does not automatically appear better. Compression, screen density, focus, and the image's intended display size also matter. For a small service website, choose source images suitable for their placement and serve appropriately sized versions. Resolution is different from aspect ratio, which describes the image's shape.
