How-To Schema Markup

How-To schema markup uses Schema.org vocabulary to describe the steps, supplies, or tools involved in completing a task.

How-To schema markup is structured data that describes a procedure with ordered steps, and sometimes required tools or materials. It may be written as JSON-LD using the Schema.org HowTo type when the page actually contains a suitable step-by-step explanation. It is a machine-readable description of existing page content, not a substitute for clear instructions that people can follow.

Google's historical How-to rich results are no longer a current search appearance. Google announced the deprecation of the desktop How-to rich result in September 2023 after earlier changes to mobile results. The existence of the Schema.org vocabulary does not mean Google will display a special how-to card, improve rankings, or accept every implementation as a supported rich-result type. A business should not budget SEO work around recovering that discontinued appearance.

A home-service publisher may still create a genuinely useful maintenance guide with headings, safety cautions, photos, and concise steps. Structured data can be evaluated for broader interoperability where a specific consumer uses it, but the user experience comes first. Compare this term with Structured Data generally and FAQ Schema Markup: each has its own vocabulary and platform-support history.
