Green Hosting
Green hosting describes web hosting that makes substantiated efforts to reduce the climate impact of the electricity and infrastructure used to run online services.
Every website depends on data centers, networks, and devices that use energy. Green hosting usually refers to providers that source or match electricity with renewable energy, pursue energy-efficiency improvements, or document other actions intended to reduce operational emissions. These approaches are not interchangeable, and an advertising claim such as “carbon neutral” needs a clear definition of its boundary and supporting evidence.
When comparing hosts, ask what infrastructure is covered, whether renewable supply is directly purchased or matched through certificates, what reporting period is used, and whether an independent organization has assessed the evidence. The Green Web Foundation maintains a verification program and a directory of hosting providers. Its verification criteria are evolving in 2026, so an older badge should not replace a current review of the provider's disclosures.
A greener hosting choice does not automatically make a large or wasteful website efficient. Image compression, sensible caching, modest scripts, and good page design can also reduce unnecessary resource use. For a small business choosing a host, environmental claims should be weighed alongside uptime, security, data residency, support, and total cost. Neither a green badge nor a sustainability slogan guarantees SEO performance.
