Geo Lift Testing
Geo lift testing is an incrementality experiment comparing advertising outcomes across appropriately matched or randomized geographic treatment and control areas.
Geo lift testing asks whether advertising produces results that would not otherwise have occurred. Instead of giving all credit to users who clicked or saw an ad, a study changes ad exposure or spend across geographic areas and compares outcomes with suitable control areas. The aim is to estimate the causal difference, often called incremental lift.
A regional HVAC advertiser might increase advertising in one set of comparable markets while maintaining a control pattern elsewhere. Analysts then evaluate qualified calls or booked jobs, allowing for seasonal changes and differences in market size. Randomization or defensible matching, a predeclared measurement period, adequate conversion volume, and a credible outcome definition are essential. Customers moving or shopping across boundaries can contaminate the comparison.
Google Ads documents geography-based Conversion Lift experiments, but eligibility and setup are not universally available; advertisers should check current account access rather than assume there is a self-service button. A statistically inconclusive study does not prove advertising has zero value. Ordinary location reports show where conversions happened; geo lift testing investigates how many additional conversions were caused by the tested advertising. For a small service business with limited geographic reach, insufficient independent regions or demand can make a reliable test impractical.
