Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is an emerging term for improving how helpful, attributable information is discovered and represented in AI-assisted search experiences.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) describes work aimed at making a brand's information useful and understandable in search experiences that generate answers. The term is not a separate Google ranking system or an official certification. A good starting point is accurate, original content that answers a real question, identifies its subject clearly, and provides evidence where a claim needs support.
Google's guidance for AI search features explicitly emphasizes the fundamentals of SEO: pages that can be crawled and indexed, accessible textual information, useful firsthand detail and structured data that agrees with visible content. There is no special schema type or AI-only file required for inclusion in Google's AI features. Other AI systems have different retrieval and citation mechanisms, so an improvement in one experience does not guarantee appearances in another.
GEO and traditional SEO overlap substantially. Measure outcomes conservatively through available referral, visibility and conversion evidence, and separate observed citations from speculative 'AI ranking' claims. Avoid mass-producing similar pages or buying placements advertised as guaranteed AI mentions.
