Funnel Exploration (GA4)

GA4 funnel exploration measures users progressing through defined steps and counts entry differently in open and closed funnels.

Funnel exploration in Google Analytics 4 is an analysis technique for examining how users progress through a defined sequence of steps. A service business might explore visits to a quote page, form starts, and completed submissions, but only when the corresponding events or dimensions are measured correctly. GA4 can define up to 10 steps in a funnel exploration and distinguishes open from closed funnels: an open funnel lets users enter at any qualifying step, while a closed funnel requires an entry through the first step. Users are counted only for steps completed in the specified order, and within the selected date range GA4 reports a user's first qualifying sequence rather than every repeated pass through the funnel. Step conditions, time limits, reporting settings, and the choice of directly or indirectly following steps can change the result. Drop-off indicates where the measured sequence stopped; it does not establish why someone left or guarantee that an interface change will improve conversion. Funnel exploration is a reporting method, not the same as the broader business concept of a conversion funnel.
