Form Field Placeholder

A form field placeholder is short hint text displayed inside an input before someone types.

A form field placeholder is short hint text displayed inside an input before someone types. In a quote request form, a field for a ZIP code might show an example of the expected format. Placeholders can clarify an example, but they should not replace visible field labels. As soon as a visitor begins typing, placeholder text may disappear, making it hard to remember what the form asked for. Some users also struggle with faint placeholder contrast. Accessible form labels identify the purpose of a field; a placeholder is optional supporting guidance. Use brief hints only when they genuinely help visitors provide accurate information.
