Five-Second Test
A five-second test is a quick research method in which someone sees a design briefly, then answers questions about what they noticed or understood.
A five-second test is a quick research method in which someone sees a design briefly, then answers questions about what they noticed or understood. For a landscaping homepage, participants might be asked what service the company provides or what action they would take next. The short exposure can reveal whether the headline, imagery, and visual hierarchy communicate the main message promptly. It is not a measure of actual reading speed, long-term recall, or conversion performance. Results depend on participant selection and the questions asked. A five-second test can help refine an early concept, but it should complement more realistic task-based testing before major design decisions are made.
