First-Click Testing

First-click testing evaluates where people click first when asked to complete a task in an interface.

First-click testing evaluates where people click first when asked to complete a task in an interface. A participant might be shown a cleaning company's homepage and asked where they would look to request a move-out cleaning quote. Their first choice can reveal whether navigation labels, page hierarchy, and calls to action match expectations. The test can use a live page, prototype, or static design, and results should be interpreted in light of the task and sample. First-click testing differs from a complete usability test because it focuses on the initial decision rather than the entire journey. An effective first click is useful evidence, not proof that the remaining experience works well.
