Email Subject Line Testing
Email subject line testing compares alternative subject lines to learn which better supports a defined campaign objective for a particular audience.
Subject line testing is often implemented as an A/B experiment in an email platform. A sender splits an eligible audience, shows comparable groups different subject lines and evaluates a predefined outcome. For marketing emails, that outcome may be qualified clicks, signups or bookings rather than just opens. Mail privacy features and automated activity can make open data an unreliable proxy for human attention.
A credible test changes the subject line while holding the message, send timing and audience composition as consistent as possible. It needs adequate volume and a decision rule set before results are reviewed. Very small local-business lists may not yield a confident winner, so observed differences should be treated cautiously.
The words must also match the email content. A misleading “urgent account warning” subject line used to sell a routine service harms trust and can raise compliance questions. Testing is distinct from simply writing a subject line: the defining activity is making a comparison and learning whether a change matters to the chosen business outcome.
