Dynamic Pricing
Dynamic pricing is a pricing approach in which the quoted price changes based on predefined conditions such as demand, availability or timing.
Dynamic pricing updates a price when relevant conditions change. An online service might vary rates by appointment window, remaining capacity, distance or season. The business should know which factors influence the quoted amount and whether those factors are appropriate for the service and market. Automation may execute the rule, but the policy itself is a management decision.
A seasonal lawn-care company could publish different fees for standard and peak-demand scheduling windows. Customers should see the price and any applicable conditions before accepting a booking. Teams need safeguards against erroneous data, large unexpected swings and rules that might create unfair or unlawful discrimination. Changes should be tested for actual margin, customer satisfaction and cancellation effects, not just higher average order value.
Dynamic pricing is different from personalized pricing, which may use characteristics or inferred willingness to pay for particular customers. It also differs from tiered pricing, where buyers select among predefined service packages, and value-based pricing, where price reflects perceived customer benefit. Dynamic does not automatically mean real-time, AI-generated or more profitable; manual seasonal rate adjustments can also fit the definition.
