Dynamic Number Insertion (DNI)

Dynamic number insertion (DNI) changes the phone number displayed to a website visitor based on defined tracking rules to help attribute calls.

Dynamic number insertion (DNI) is a call-attribution technique. A website replaces a displayed phone number with a tracking number selected for a channel, campaign, or visitor session. Calls route to the business while the tracking system records information about the source. The goal is to connect phone enquiries with marketing activity, which ordinary web form tracking cannot capture by itself.

Implementations vary: a small system may use one tracking number per source, while a session-based setup can draw from a number pool. The number pool, cookie policy, and matching logic affect attribution accuracy. A call being tracked does not prove that the associated campaign created a qualified sale. Businesses must also consider recording disclosures, data retention, and accessibility of clickable telephone links.

Do not alter the business’s authoritative phone details in third-party listings simply to rotate tracking numbers on the website. Keep the primary contact path reliable and test both desktop display and mobile click-to-call behavior.
