Domain Privacy Protection
Domain privacy protection is a registration-related service or arrangement that limits the public display of certain contact information associated with a domain name.
Domain privacy protection covers arrangements that limit which domain-registration contact details appear in public registration data. ICANN distinguishes a privacy service, where the customer remains the registrant and alternative contact details are displayed, from a proxy service, where the provider is the registrant of record. Separately, some registration information may be redacted under applicable registration-data rules without use of an optional privacy service. These arrangements can reduce public exposure of contact details but do not promise anonymity or excuse inaccurate registrar records. A small business should check its registrar's terms, which party has the legal registrant role, how authorized contact requests are handled, and how to retain control of renewals and the domain account. None of these services replaces a website privacy notice or security practices such as multifactor authentication.
