Domain Name

A domain name is the human-readable address people use to reach a website, such as a business name followed by .com.

A domain name is the human-readable address people use to reach a website, such as a business name followed by .com. The domain points browsers toward the systems that serve the site, but it is not the website's files or hosting service. Businesses generally register domain names through a registrar and renew them to keep control of the address. A short, recognizable name is often easier to say over the phone or print on a work vehicle. Before choosing one, check spelling, brand consistency, and ownership arrangements. Having a domain also does not automatically provide a working website or professional email; those are separate services.
