DNS A Record

A DNS A record maps a domain or hostname to an IPv4 address.

A DNS A record maps a domain or hostname to an IPv4 address. When a browser looks up a website hostname, this record can help it find the network address of the server that should receive the connection. A business moving web hosting might need its A record changed, but doing so incorrectly can direct visitors to the wrong server or interrupt access. An A record is different from an MX record, which helps route email, and from a CNAME record, which points one hostname to another hostname rather than directly supplying an IPv4 address. DNS updates may take time to propagate through caches, so changes should be planned and verified carefully.
