Deployment Window
A deployment window is a planned period in which a team releases software or website changes under agreed monitoring, communication and rollback conditions.
A deployment window sets an operational expectation for when a change may reach users. It often reflects available support staff, traffic patterns, business events and the risk of the particular release. Updating a footer link may be safe at any hour, while a database migration or checkout change may need a coordinated slot with engineers and customer support ready. The chosen time is not necessarily a period of downtime.
For a high-impact release, teams should identify the change owner, pre-deployment checks, backup or rollback mechanism, monitoring signals and a clear decision to continue or abort. Make sure external services, payment providers and dependent systems are accounted for. A rollback plan must address data changes as well as application code; reverting code may not reverse a destructive schema migration.
A deployment window is distinct from deployment itself. The window defines the approved timing and operating conditions; the deployment is the actual release. Modern teams may safely deploy small changes continuously instead of imposing fixed windows for everything. Measure incidents and customer disruption to decide where scheduling adds value, rather than assuming that deploying at midnight automatically makes a change safe.
