Data Sampling
Data sampling happens when an analytics system analyzes a subset of available observations to estimate results instead of using every relevant event.
Data sampling happens when an analytics system analyzes a subset of available observations to estimate results instead of using every relevant event. It can make complex reports faster, but figures may differ from calculations based on complete data. In GA4, sampling behavior depends on report type, query complexity, and property settings; ordinary standard reports are not always handled the same way as Explorations. A small business reviewing a complex custom analysis should check the report's data-quality indicators before treating a small difference as a real trend. Sampling is distinct from data retention limits, which determine how long certain underlying information remains available for analysis.
