Dark Mode Toggle
A dark mode toggle is an interface control that lets a person switch a website between darker and lighter visual color schemes.
A dark mode toggle gives visitors a preference for how a website looks. Some sites honor the device's system color scheme by default and allow a separate manual choice. The control should make its current state clear, be usable by keyboard and assistive technology, and avoid surprising visitors by resetting the scheme on every page.
Dark styling takes more than swapping white backgrounds for black. Text, links, form controls, icons, charts and focus indicators need sufficient contrast in both modes. Images and logos may need alternative treatments, while user-generated content can bring unexpected combinations. Color alone should not convey whether an item is active or valid.
Implementers should test the first render so the page does not flash a mismatched theme, and consider how a saved preference interacts with browser storage and privacy practices. A dark mode toggle is a design and interaction feature; it is not Google's AI Mode, a web accessibility certification or a performance guarantee. Some users find dark themes comfortable, while others prefer light backgrounds.
