Customer Portal
A customer portal is a secure digital area where customers can view or manage information and actions related to their relationship with a business.
Depending on the service, a customer portal may expose appointments, invoices, support requests, account details, documents or project status. It can reduce the need for repetitive phone calls by making common tasks self-service. The portal is a customer-facing interface, not necessarily the same system as the company’s internal CRM or administrative dashboard.
Access control is central. Users should see only records they are authorized to view, and sensitive tasks may require stronger authentication, session protection and audit trails. Accessible navigation, clear status labels and sensible recovery options are also important: a confusing portal can create more support work than it saves. Product teams should decide which tasks actually benefit from self-service.
A portal does not need to offer every possible account feature. A small business might begin with invoice access and scheduling before adding document sharing or ticket histories. The term should distinguish the customer interface from the back-office software that stores and processes those same records.
