Customer acquisition payback period estimates how long it takes for the contribution generated by newly acquired customers to recover the cost of acquiring them. A recurring cleaning company might compare acquisition spending with the margin earned across customers' subsequent visits. The result depends on which acquisition costs, margins, and customer cohorts are included. A one-time repair business may need a different interpretation from a subscription-style service. This metric connects customer acquisition cost to financial returns over time, but it is not the same as customer lifetime value. Short payback is not automatically the best business decision if customer quality or operational capacity suffers.
